Rail & Maritime Intermodal

Along the Water's Edge

The Scandinavian rail network does not end at the ocean—it dissolves smoothly into coastal ferry lines, deep-water ports, and monumental marine bridges.

West Coast Gateway

The Flåm Fjord Spur

Descending 866 meters over just 20 kilometers from Myrdal mountain junction to Aurlandsfjord, the Flåmsbana is one of the world's steepest standard-gauge rail lines. At the platform in Flåm, passengers step off the train and directly onto silent electric catamarans sailing down the UNESCO Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen.

From Gudvangen, connecting electric coaches link travellers back to Voss station to rejoin the mainline Bergen Line westward to Bergen.

Arctic Maritime Nexus

Bodø: The Lofoten Railhead

Bodø marks the northernmost tip of Norway's continuous domestic railway network (the Nordland Line). The tracks terminate within walking distance of the harbor quay.

Here, the rails transfer passengers directly to express passenger catamarans (hurtigbåt) or vehicle ferries bound for Moskenes, Svolvær, and the granite wall of the Lofoten archipelago.

Strait Engineering

The Øresund Maritime Crossing

Connecting Copenhagen Central with Malmö, the Øresund Link carries double-deck regional Øresundståg trains beneath the sea in the Drogden Tunnel before elevating them along the lower deck of the 7.8 km cable-stayed bridge over open water.

Departures run every 15 to 20 minutes, offering a smooth international sea transit in roughly 35 minutes.

Integrating the Coastal Express (Havila & Hurtigruten)

A classic Nordic itinerary combines train travel with the Norwegian Coastal Express (operated by Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages). Because trains cannot navigate the steep, fragmented western coastline between Bergen, Ålesund, and Bodø, sea vessels serve as a scenic waterborne bridge:

  • Step 1: Ride the Bergen Line from Oslo to Bergen.
  • Step 2: Board the Coastal Express northbound from Bergen harbor, calling into coastal villages and navigating fjords.
  • Step 3: Disembark at Trondheim and catch the Dovre Line train back over the interior mountains, or sail onward to Bodø to join the Arctic rails.
